Carry for the working sommelier

Bags & totes that move with your tea practice

From morning tastings to evening service, our carry pieces are developed with and for the tea community — robust gaiwan totes, protective cake-cloth rolls, and a knapsack refined after two years of on-site use at tea-house programs across Guangdong. Every seam and strap answers a real need on the go.

The tradition of carrying tea

Long before dedicated commercial kitchens, a tea master’s skill was inseparable from the tools they could carry. Along the historic trade corridors mapped in tea.travel, itinerant gongfu practitioners rolled their yixing pots and tiny cups in cloth bundles, moving between villages and private gatherings. Those early carry solutions were as personal as the tea itself — a reflection of the maker’s taste and the seriousness of their craft.

Today, the working sommelier’s kit has expanded: multiple gaiwans, a precision scale, aroma cups, a folding tea tray, and perhaps a small selection of pu-erh cakes that need stable humidity. Our bags & totes series re-thinks that heritage for modern service. We use natural linen and heavy-gauge canvas, materials that age gracefully and resist the moisture and heat common in tea settings. The cut and internal pocketing are based on direct observation of professionals — pulling out a set of porcelain cups in a tight tasting room should be silent, swift, and beautiful.

The gaiwan tote — natural linen was prototyped alongside trainers at tea.school, where students move through three to four brewing stations daily and need quick access to everything from a 100 ml gaiwan to a small fairness pitcher. The cake-cloth roll — charcoal reinterprets the traditional cloth bundle with an adjustable tie and a breathable inner layer, ideal for short-distance transport of sheng pu-erh cakes. The sommelier knapsack — natural carries a full gongfu travel kit plus a laptop or notebook, born from weekly restaurant residencies run by our head sommelier. Finally, the tea-tray carry case — black canvas is a purpose-built shell for standard 40 cm × 30 cm bamboo trays, protecting the tray surface and containing any residual moisture.

Each piece is produced in limited runs by sandry-law, an atelier known for thoughtful, low-waste production methods. The result is a carry kit that feels authentic to tea practice — not a fashion afterthought, but a tool that earns its place in your daily service.

A buyer's note

Choosing the right bag for your tea practice

What do you carry daily?

If you mainly transport a gaiwan, fairness pitcher and a few cups, the gaiwan tote is perfectly proportioned. For full pu-erh cake transport, choose the cake-cloth roll.

Protection first

Bamboo tea trays are delicate; the tea-tray carry case’s padded canvas shell and internal straps keep your tray safe in transit, whether by bike or on foot.

Material warmth and resilience

Our natural linen and charcoal canvas picks up a gentle patina over time, much like a well-used clay pot. They are pre-washed for softness and will not transfer odours to your teaware.

Compartments matter

The sommelier knapsack includes a padded laptop sleeve, two internal drop pockets sized for aroma cups, and an external zippered pocket for a small scale or thermometer. If your day includes tastings and admin, this is your bag.

Cleaning and care

Spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid machine washing to preserve the natural fibre structure and the shape of stitched pockets.

Common questions

Asked, answered.

Will a standard 100 ml gaiwan fit in the tote?

Yes. The gaiwan tote’s main padded compartment was shaped to hold a 100–120 ml gaiwan safely, with room for two small cups and a slim fairness pitcher.

Can the cake-cloth roll carry multiple cakes?

Up to three standard 200 g pu-erh cakes, stacked and tied securely. The tie adjusts to single-cake thickness for a compact load.

Is the tea-tray carry case waterproof?

The black canvas is treated with a wax-free DWR finish that repels light moisture. It holds residual water from a damp tray without soaking through immediately, but prolonged submersion is not recommended.

Are the bags unisex?

All pieces are designed and graded for a wide range of body types, with adjustable straps and neutral silhouettes.

How heavy is the sommelier knapsack when empty?

Approximately 680 g — light enough for all-day wear, yet sturdy enough to protect delicate teaware.

Are these suitable for air travel?

The sommelier knapsack fits under most airline seats. The cake-cloth roll is best carried inside a larger bag for cabin stowage. We recommend removing sharp tools before flying.
