Kunming workshop · a bag born on the road

Sandry Law, Head of Procurement for Teamotea, has spent over a decade journeying through Yunnan’s tea mountains, sourcing raw leaf and building relationships with farmers. His daily kit — a gaiwan, a small pitcher, three cups — travelled wrapped in cloth inside a battered knapsack, chips and cracks part of the routine. Tired of makeshift padding, he sketched a tote that could hold his set with the precision of a tea tray. Working with a textile workshop in Kunming, he sourced natural linen woven in a village near Dali, reinforced the base with a double layer, and designed padded sleeves that hug each piece. The leather handles are stitched by hand, echoing the craft of saddle-makers along the old Tea Horse Road. Each bag is numbered and inspected by Sandry himself before it leaves the workshop — a piece of kit for the working sommelier, as essential as the water kettle.

The leaf, brewed

Everyday carry for the tea traveller

dry leaf

Natural linen with a plain weave, subtly variegated. The fabric breathes like a well-stored puerh cake.

wet leaf

Padded sleeves protect a gaiwan, pitcher, and three cups even when damp from use. Linen softens with handling, picking up the faint scent of tea oils.

liquor

The tote’s natural colour complements celadon and white porcelain, a muted presence that lets the tea service take centre stage.

aroma

Warm linen and leather handle evoke a grounded, unassuming presence — never interfering with the fragrance of the session.

taste

Balanced weight distribution on the shoulder, a considered load for urban walks and mountain paths alike.

finish

The leather handle warms to the hand, leaving a tactile memory as persistent as a gentle huigan.

Brewing

A method, not a recipe.

This piece holds your gear — no brewing required. For gaiwan technique, explore foundation courses on tea.school.
