A buyer's note

Choosing & caring for your cloths

For standard 357g cakes, a 35×35 cm square provides a comfortable overlap. Smaller 100–200g mini cakes work well with 25×25 cm cloths, while large 500g+ discs may call for 40–45 cm wraps. Measure your cake’s diameter and add 10–15 cm for a generous fold.

Cotton and linen wick moisture away from the cake yet allow slow air exchange — essential for aging. Avoid synthetic blends or tight weaves that trap humidity, which can encourage mould.

After any washing (see FAQ), lay the cloth flat in shade until completely dry. Never wrap a cake with a damp cloth; residual moisture can ruin a session and damage the cake.

On humid summer days, swap cloths every few weeks to prevent mustiness. Keep a second set on hand so one can rest, aired out, while the other protects the cake.

Loosen the cloth without yanking. The fabric may hug the cake tightly; a slow, two-handed peel protects the paper wrapper beneath and keeps the cake intact.

Cloths are a supplement, not a substitute. Store wrapped cakes in a non-odorous container, away from strong sunlight and kitchen smells. For precise humidity control, combine these wraps with Boveda packs or a dedicated pu'er humidor.

Common questions

Asked, answered.

Why wrap pu'er cakes in cloth?

Breathable cloth shields the cake from dust and direct light while allowing the slow exchange of air — essential for microbial activity and natural aging. It also prevents the paper wrapper from becoming brittle.

Can I use these cloths for other teas?

Absolutely. They work beautifully for aged white tea cakes, brick teas, or even to line a tea caddy. Just reserve one cloth per tea type to avoid cross-contamination of aromas.

Are the prints food-safe?

Yes. All cotton and linen cloths are printed with water-based, solvent-free pigments that dry to a non-transferable finish, safe for direct contact with tea cake wrappers.

How should I wash them?

Wash separately in cold water with a mild, fragrance-free soap. Do not bleach or use fabric softener. Hang dry in shade; iron on low if needed. Wash before first use and whenever they pick up dust.

Do you sell individual cloths?

Our current offer is the six-piece linen cake-wrap set. For single custom-print cloths, stay tuned to <a href="https://tea.community">tea.community</a> for limited drops.

Will the print fade over time?

The pigment is lightfast and set with heat during production. With gentle washing and air-drying, the design will hold its character for years, developing a subtle lived-in patina.

What size cloth do I need for a standard 357g cake?

Our 35cm squares fit perfectly. You’ll have enough fabric to fold over the cake twice, ensuring a snug wrap that stays put without ties.

Do these cloths replace humidity control?

No, they complement it. Use them together with Boveda packs or a salt-based humidifier to maintain stable relative humidity (ideally 60–70% for pu'er). The cloth alone won’t regulate humidity, but it buffers small swings.
